Bunion surgery may be performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis, under local or general anesthesia.

Here, from Dr. Roger Mann, of the University of California in San Francisco, are descriptions of various bunion operations: Bumpectomy: The bump is removed, but the bones that form the toe joint (the big-toe bone, or phalanx, and the foot bone, or metatarsal) are left alone.
