Doctors find gene tied to mental retardation

ATLANTA Scientists said Wednesday they have identified the source of the most commonly inherited genetic form of mental retardation.

Researchers from the United States and the Netherlands, in a report published in the scientific journal Cell, said they had located the gene that causes fragile X chromosome syndrome.

The syndrome's symptoms range from subtle learning disabilities to severe retardation, and the defective gene occurs in one out of every 1,000 males and in one out of every 660 females throughout the world. Some gene carriers are completely normal but risk passing the syndrome ...
