Crazy Horse takes shape on big scale

CRAZY HORSE, S.D. Long before Kevin Costner dreamed up "Dances With Wolves," a Polish-American sculptor named Korczak Ziolkowski conceived his own grand vision for paying tribute to North America's Indians.

Korzcak died at age 74 in 1982, after 35 years of blasting on the granite mountain he'd chosen for the Crazy Horse Memorial, 17 miles southwest of Mt. Rushmore. And it may still turn out that his monumental plan to create a 563-foot-tall equestrian statue of the 19th century Sioux chief Crazy Horse was an impossible dream.
