Even in bad shape, a fine example of an early 19th century
silhouette can find a buyer willing to part with several hundred
dollars. Silhouettes are almost a lost art form these days, but
there are a few contemporary artists who are fascinated by
silhouettes and are reviving the art form.
Etienne de Silhouette, finance minister of France in 1757,
enjoyed cutting profiles as a hobby; hence the name. For years,
schoolchildren learned how to cut crude silhouettes of their
profiles. Those made in the 1930s have collector value, especially
if the child turned out to be famous.
