Martha Graham, 96, dies - icon of modern dance

Martha Graham, the American choreographer whose work established
modern dance as a major American art form, died Monday at age 96 of
congestive heart failure at her home in New York City.
A commanding presence onstage and off, with her sleek, dark
chignon, haughty cheekbones and Halston caftans, she had continued
dancing until age 75. She had become fragile in recent years, though
last season her Martha Graham Dance Company performed hew newest
work, a surprisingly witty piece set to Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf
Rag."
The Ravinia Festival recently announced that her company would
