Bush slashes 70 percent of Poland's debt to U.S.
|
WASHINGTON President Bush welcomed Poland's Lech Walesa on
Wednesday by wiping out 70 percent of his struggling nation's debt to
the U.S. government and urging businesses in this country to invest
there.
"We want your economic transformation to succeed, your new
democracy to flourish," Bush told the former shipyard electrician and
Solidarity union leader, who three months ago became Poland's first
freely elected president.
Walesa, looking out over a White House South Lawn ceremony of
