Inland brass gives Irons chance to show his mettle

Earmon J. Irons Jr. has worked almost exclusively with numbers during his 24-year career at Inland Steel Co.

But the 52-year-old Irons realizes that if you treat employees like numbers, the company's number could be up.

"A manager has to listen to employees," he said. "A lot of times employees have answers to problems, but management doesn't listen. The employees get frustrated and stop giving answers."

Named general manager of Inland Steel Industrial Products Co. last month, Irons will have plenty of opportunity to test his philosophy.
