Top German pol quits posts after informer charge
|
BONN Lothar de Maiziere, top politician in the old East Germany,
quit his Cabinet and party posts in the reunified Germany on Monday
after failing to disprove charges that he had once been a Communist
informer.
De Maiziere, prime minister in the only freely elected
government East Germany ever had, insisted that he was innocent and
said he would work to clear his name.
He conceded, however, that an investigation he requested into
secret police files had not been able to disprove allegations that he
was an informer for the hated Ministry for State Security, or Stasi.
