Tunku Abdul Rahman, 87, Malaysia's 1st prime minister

KUALA LUMPUR Tunku Abdul Rahman, who won independence for Malaysia from Britain in 1957 and then served as the nation's first prime minister until he retired in 1970, died Thursday night at 87.

A team of five doctors had tried to save the life of Tunku Rahman, who since Wednesday had been in a coma with severe intestinal bleeding and other problems.

The chief secretary to the government, Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, made the announcement at the government's General Hospital. He said Tunku Rahman would be accorded a state funeral with a gun salute and honor guard.
