`I shall leave my work to time to show what will come of it: a brilliant butterfly or a maggot," Caspar David Friedrich wrote shortly before he died. At that point he had suffered a paralyzing stroke, his moody paintings were no longer sought after and the style of painting that he despised - realist landscapes - had become the fashion of the day. He had little hope that his mysterious pictures would earn him a reputation as one of the greatest painters of the 19th century, Germany's embodiment of Romanticism, a favorite among art historians.
