Italian writer Alberto Moravia, 82

ROME Alberto Moravia, a sharp-eyed Roman storyteller who became the grand old man of contemporary Italian literature with his novels about women, sex and middle-class morals, died Wednesday in his apartment overlooking the Tiber. He was 82.

His family said the prolific and controversial figure, whose career spanned six decades, became ill while taking his morning bath, only two days after a doctor had examined him and pronounced him fit. A stroke was the suspected cause of death.
