Hostilities cut off research at ancient sites

Some of the world's most important archeological digs - those in the fertile crescent of Mesopotamia - now can be added to Saddam Hussein's hostage list.

The fertile crescent of Mesopotamia is better known as Iraq.

"All American projects in Iraq are on hold," said William Sumner, director of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute.

Especially affected are plans to continue the university's major excavation this winter in the Holy City of Nippur, about 60 miles southwest of Baghdad.
