To the rescue of crumbling books // U. of C.'s Crerar Library gets $1.4 million grant
|
John Crerar was a railroad man, an early Chicagoan with a
fascination for the impact of industry and technology on his rapidly
growing city.
Childless and heirless, Crerar reached the end of his life 100
years ago nursing the usual desire for a touch of immortality. So he
stipulated that his $2.5 million estate should go to build the John
Crerar Library, now part of the University of Chicago.
