Angolan nationalist Mario Pinto de Andrade

LONDON Mario Pinto de Andrade, the father of Angolan nationalism and first president of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, which has ruled Angola since independence in 1975, died Sunday in London. He was 62.

A spokesman for University Hospital said Mr. Pinto de Andrade died of a chronic disease.

A writer and historian, Mr. Pinto de Andrade was one of Angola's leading intellectuals, active in the country's struggle against Portuguese colonial rule and a critic of the single-party state that followed it.

Born Aug. 21, 1928, in Golungo Alto, Angola, he studied in Portugal ...
