Happy birthday Bugs // The wascally wabbit faces the challenge of keeping contemporary

Fifty years ago, Bugs Bunny burst out of a pack of cartoon
competitors. His "Eh, what's up, Doc?" was as defiant in the
reserved 1940s and '50s as Bart Simpson's "Don't have a cow, man" is
today.
As a child of that era, it always seemed to me that the
carrot-chomper's contemporaries lacked his cool attitude: Mickey
Mouse was harmlessly sweet, Woody Woodpecker was too disturbed, Tom
and Jerry were an ongoing blur of chases, and Daffy Duck was funny
but not someone to identify with.
Bugs was the master of contradictions, confident and coy, as
ready to revel in a fake death scene as he was ...
