In a new movie named "The Freshman," Marlon Brando goes ice-skating. Simply ice-skating, his vast bulk gliding over the ice with his partner, the actress who plays his daughter. He guides her gently and with grace, until they pull up at the rail. I have seen the film twice, and both times some members of the audience have applauded.

Why? Because it is thrilling to see a man in his 60s ice-skate? Because one does not expect it of Brando? Because he seems too heavy to be so graceful? None of the obvious answers seem to apply. Perhaps we should look earlier in the movie, to a scene where he ...
