Gays applaud Liebman for coming out

The revelation by 66-year-old conservative Republican Marvin Liebman that he is gay drew accolades from the gay and lesbian community here Thursday.

"Liebman's coming out is important because of his admonishment of the conservative movement for being overtaken with bigotry on this issue," said Tim Drake, a co-chairman of the Illinois Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Liebman, founder of Young Americans for Freedom, said he wanted to alert the conservative community to the dangers of homophobia and said he feared the American right might regress to the days when it was "heavily, perhaps ...
