Umbrella's acceptance rose slowly

An umbrella is part of the uniform of the well-dressed British
businessman, but at one time the device was shunned in England as a
"French parasol."
It was James Hanway, a traveler and fastidious dresser, who,
according to an article in Victoria, made the umbrella fashionable in
England.
In the 1750s, he adopted the outlandish practice of carrying an
umbrella in the streets of London, primarily, according to his valet,
to protect his wig. For a while, umbrellas were referred to as
"hanways."
