Art Institute places 11 works on block to pay for sculpture

The Art Institute of Chicago will auction 11 works of art next
week in an effort to recover the $12 million purchase price of
Constantin Brancusi's masterly bronze sculpture, "Golden Bird."
The museum agreed to acquire the 71-year-old work from the Arts
Club of Chicago to keep it in Chicago, said director James N. Wood.
Among the paintings the museum will sell are works by the
modernist masters Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani,
Maurice Utrillo and Pierre Bonnard. A pastel by Edgar Degas also
will be sold.
The museum has taken possession of the Brancusi sculpture and is ...
