U.S. finally is adapting to a new age of global politics

When George Bush this week employed the wisdom of Yogi Berra to
explain his decision on Lithuania, many Americans tried not to
snicker. "I don't want to make the wrong mistake," the president
said, sounding remarkably uninspiring.
But those words - used as the president abandoned the threat of
sanctions against the Soviets for their crackdown on Lithuanian
independence - were wiser than at first appeared. Indeed, they may
herald a new era in foreign policy and show the degree to which Bush
is mastering the post-Vietnam politics of relative power.
