Ralph Abernathy dies

ATLANTA The Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, the right-hand man to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, died today at an Atlanta hospital. He was 64.

Mr. Abernathy died at Crawford Long Hospital, the public relations office confirmed. The cause of death was not available.

He was president emeritus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and pastor of West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta.
