Hollywood thinks it has a problem: Where are the great roles for a
woman old enough not to want to play the ingenue but young enough to
still be in the game? The Sigourney Weaver or Susan Sarandon roles?
The roles that reassure baby boomers that they're still sexy and
vital even if they've fallen out of the most desirable demographic?
It's worse in opera. Consider the dilemma for a singer like
soprano Kiri Te Kanawa who, at 58, is still strikingly attractive and
still singing, yet is not so addicted to the stage that she has the
