Holy Family Church tests Chicagoans' can-do spirit

The tall carved doors of Holy Family Church still are sealed, although there's more hope now of reopening them for good.

The bells in the spiky Gothic tower haven't rung in years, and the clock has stopped. Under the leaky roof, plaster damage mars some decorative inner walls.

Time itself hasn't stopped at Holy Family. But the church's main sanctuary has been closed since 1984, and time never is neutral in such matters.

Standing there so grave and silent at 1080 W. Roosevelt, the big Gothic church is a symbol of a lost Chicago struggling to regain itself. Holy Family tests our ...
