Bitterness tempers celebration in Romanian community here

"I like what I'm seeing, I really do," said a delighted Viorel Catarama as television news showed a portrait of Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu being engulfed in flames.

Catarama's feelings were typical of the reaction Friday in Chicago's 20,000-strong Romanian community to news that the hard-line Communist dictator was driven from power by his own people.

"Our hearts are full of joy and gladness," said Pastor George Gage, of St. Mary's Church, 4225 N. Central Ave.

But it was a joy tinged with bitterness over the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of demonstrators killed by security ...
