Lake Forest is a North Shore suburb of expensive homes and tree-lined streets. Residents intend to keep it that way.

Village codes are strict, calling for quiet plumbing, jiggle-free floors and white drapes. The village also is being careful in developing its open space.

Recently 47,000 square feet of retail and office space was created - a mix of small shops, family-owned businesses and some large stores such as Marshall Field's. No land is zoned for industrial use.
