PALM BEACH, Fla. In 1901, Henry Flagler - the oil and railroad tycoon, by then over 70 - gave his new wife, Mary Lily Kenan, an extraordinarily beautiful mansion in Palm Beach.

Called Whitehall, it cost about $3 million, which included its six-acre site on Lake Worth but not its lavish furnishings. In 1960, Whitehall was given again - this time to the public, as a museum.

The second donor was Jean Flagler Matthews, Henry's granddaughter, who bought the building to save it from destruction or desecration. Sold by Mary Lily's heirs in 1925, the mansion had served - with a 10-story tower ...
