The wetter the weather, the larger the algae blooms in Mill Creek.

But last year scientists discovered an exception to that rule: Although there was more precipitation in 2004 than in any year in the past two decades, the amount of algae was only at its third-highest recorded level.

What stopped the algae blooms, which wreak havoc with the delicate ecobalance in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries?

Protozoan predators, of course.
