LAUSANNE, Switzerland Georges Simenon, the prolific Belgian-born author who created the compassionate French detective Inspector Maigret, is dead at 86.

Swiss officials said Mr. Simenon died at home here Monday. His strength had ebbed over the last year, and he was confined to a wheelchair. A local funeral home said he was cremated Wednesday at a chapel near his residence.
