Phantom of the Civic Opera // Insull legacy still haunts Chicago

John O'Keefe saw the beginning and the end and liked the opening better.

When the Civic Opera Building opened 60 years ago with a performance of "Aida," the 25-year-old O'Keefe was there in top hat, tails and white tie, with his bride-to-be on his arm, amid the limousines pulled up out front.

In the foyer, his boss, Samuel Insull, was ushering a glittering array of guests into the building, the monument he had built.

It was 11 days after the stock market crash. Insull, the most powerful businessman in America, was at his peak.
