Q. I have "Gulf Coast Blues" backed with "Down Hearted Blues," by Bessie Smith. This 78 r.p.m. single was issued by Columbia on Aug. 11, 1908. What might its current value be?

A. I'm curious as to where you picked up the date, Aug. 11, 1908. Bessie Smith was born April 15, 1895, and would have been only 13 in 1908.

For the record, Smith's first tracks were done in 1921 (for Emerson Records in New York), although none of these were issued. Smith, known as the "Empress of the Blues," then went to Columbia and on Feb. 16, 1923, recorded both "Down Hearted Blues" and "Gulf Coast Blues." ...
