All-male Elks vote to drop `blackball rule' // Decision may mean more blacks can join lodges

Elks clubs are to remain "men-only" organizations for the foreseeable future, but the men may include more non-whites under rules adopted this week.

While the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks convention in New Orleans on Thursday voted against admitting women, it also did away with the Elks' "blackball rule" that may have made it harder for blacks to join.

The blackball rule, which allowed three members of a lodge to reject an applicant, was replaced by a policy under which a two-thirds majority of a lodge's membership could approve a new member.
