Branford Marsalis steps out of shadow // Not just Wynton's brother now

Branford Marsalis picked a nice warm June day to come to Chicago to promote his new album, "Trio Jeepy," and his July 5 performance at Ravinia in Highland Park. There was almost too much to do after a record store appearance. The VCR would tape his beloved but ill-fated Lakers, while he and his road manager would catch another of his favorite teams, the Mets, in a night game at Wrigley Field.

Those plans changed quickly when Marsalis was told that his new bass player, Bob Hurst, was in town at the Jazz Showcase playing with Tony Williams.
