For hundreds of years, salmon has been treasured by Northwest Indians as a source of food and a sign of prosperity. With the first salmon run of the fishing season, the tribes welcomed the first salmon caught in an elaborate thanksgiving ceremony that would end, appropriately enough, with a feast of the salmon.

On the East Coast, meanwhile, many fisherman would celebrate the start of their prime salmon season by eating creamed salmon and peas on the Fourth of July.
