Zita of Hapsburg, 96, last empress of Austria-Hungary

ZIZERS, Switzerland Zita of Hapsburg, who as Austria-Hungary's
last empress played a role in a plan to end World War I that led to
her exile, died Tuesday in a Franciscan retirement home in the Alps.
She was 96.
Empress Zita survived by 67 years her husband, Charles I, who
was deposed in 1918 as emperor of the dual monarchy of Austria and
Hungary. Her death was announced by the Austrian branch of the
Pan-American Union political movement, headed by the couple's eldest
son, Otto van Hapsburg, 77.
