DURANGO, Colo. Ask someone back home or even in distant parts of Colorado about this middling-sized town in the southwest corner of the state. If you get an answer at all, it's likely to be about Durango's notable narrow-gauge railroad.

But the railroad - closely associated with local mining lore and a major attraction in the warm weather - doesn't operate in the winter. So the likeliest response to the notion of a winter excursion here is, "Oh, really?"
