It takes a thoroughly modern curator to put a new spin on old
furniture.
At the antiques-filled Hillwood Museum, Liana Paredes Arend is
trying to do just that. The 41-year-old expert in European decorative
arts has written a book on the museum's collection of fine French
furniture. In 120 photo-filled pages, she recasts the gilded
extravagance of 18th-century aristocrats in a light that 21st-
century populists can appreciate: Versailles sparked a revolution in
