Salvador Dali dead at 84 // Eccentric, controversial artist embodied surrealism

FIGUERAS, Spain Salvador Dali, the surrealist painter,
self-promoter and genuine eccentric who once said his soul would
"live on and on, and I will keep creating and creating," died Monday
in his beloved hometown on the Costa Brava of a heart ailment
complicated by pneumonia. He was 84.
The wild-eyed Mr. Dali, an unforgettable figure with
slicked-down hair, waxed mustache and gold-headed cane, had been in
declining health for half a dozen years. He went out as he had lived
since the 1982 death of his cherished wife, Gala - in near-seclusion.
