What do you say after you've said you're sorry you had to read a
novel? Especially when it's the latest opus by Leon Uris, an author
whose earlier works - particularly Exodus - had such a powerful sense
of authenticity and passion that their impact led me to spend three
months on a kibbutz in Israel nearly 20 years ago.
While I might read Exodus far more critically today, the scales
of youthful romanticism having dropped from my eyes, I had trouble
getting through Uris' newest novel, Mitla Pass (Doubleday, $19.95).
