'Tuck Everlasting': Pursuing Life In the Slow Lane

True story: A few years ago, a friend's toddler piped up from the
back seat of the car, "Mommy, why is there yife? You're born and then
you die. What's the point?"
That young existentialist (who by now is probably sporting a black
beret and turtleneck) is most likely the ideal demographic for "Tuck
Everlasting," a surprisingly solemn family film about life and
mortality. Set in 1914, the film initially looks like a warm
children's period drama. But "Tuck Everlasting" is a 'tweener of a
movie, as awkward as those first zigzaggy years of adolescence. Its
