`Happy Birthday' for sale
|
Each time a watchmaker produces a digital watch that plays
"Happy Birthday," the publishers of the tune get a penny.
"A cent a computer chip may not seem like much," said Kate Chen
of Birchtree Ltd., Princeton, N.J., which holds the copyright, "but
it adds up."
Indeed. Royalties from watches, underwear (from Fredericks of
Hollywood), greeting cards and music boxes that play the tune, plus
movies, plays, disc jockeys and television amount to $1 million a
year, Chen said.
