Round tables once took center stage
|
Some tables in the mid-19th century always took center stage.
These round tables, the status symbol of their day, often were works
of art.
At the recent Andy Warhol auction at Sotheby's, one such table
had a pre-auction estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. An elegant piece
it was, in the classical style. The top was painted with a scene,
and combined floral stencils with brass. It was attributed to John
Finlay of Baltimore, circa 1825.
The earliest known version of the center table was made in Rome
in the 2nd century. It had a marble top. In England, a
