For Continental Bank chairman Theobald, brighter profits translate to brighter office

A renovation of the chairman's office at Continental Bank could be a quiet message about the bank's profit picture.

Describing his second-floor office as "a dark hole," Continental Chairman Thomas Theobald vowed during an interview this summer, "I'm going to get rid of it as soon as we report over $300 million in earnings."

Workers today have removed some of the leaded glass, oak paneling and a fireplace that were purchased by the bank in 1928. The accoutrements originally were stripped from Shrewsbury Castle in England by Chicago businessman Marshall Field III.
