Seeking the soul of Seoul amid the din of progress

SEOUL In Seoul, I had a favorite ritual. In the early morning, I
would jog to the top of Namsan, the hill in the city center that has
been preserved as a wooded park.
Along the winding road, I would pass old men playing badminton,
children peddling hard on new bicycles, squads of sweating soldiers
running in formation. The Koreans, you see, rank among the most firm
and passionate of people - be the subject politics, religion or the
