Galena question: How much tourism is just too much?

Chicago Sun-Times | July 24, 1988| | Copyright

These are boom times for tourism in Galena. The over-all hotel occupancy rate has doubled to an impressive 68 percent during the last three years in this hot spot for fans of scenery, history, architecture and shopping, set amid the hills of northwestern Illinois.

The occupancy rate hits 100 percent on the busiest weekends, when visitors without advance reservations may find themselves exiled to motels as far as 50 or 75 miles away. A 52-room Best Western property scheduled to open at the start of next year may help ease the weekend room crush.
