Harold's parrakeets still raise a squawk
|
A large ash tree looms, like the fabled Yggdrasill of Norse
mythology, across from where former Mayor Harold Washington lived,
with a legend of its own.
In its branches nest a colony of wild South American monk
parrakeets with a perch in Chicago folklore.
Human neighbors of the parrakeets organized a telephone tree and
24-hour watch this spring to protect the birds from U.S. officials
who seemed to be threatening the feathered immigrant "pests" with
permanent deportation.
"We could have had 50 people out there at 10 minutes' notice to
protect the birds with our bodies," boasted Hyde ...
