Law hits computer terminals

WASHINGTON For the first time since the computer age began in the American workplace, a government unit has voted to regulate the use of video display terminals in private industry.

The Suffolk County, N.Y., legislature Tuesday night voted 13-5 to override a veto by County Executive Patrick G. Halpin and imposed strict new standards for private employers with 20 or more computer terminals. The new law applies to all equipment purchased after Jan. 1, 1990.
