More legends than documented facts surround Satchel Paige.
The lanky, spindly-legged black right-hander spent virtually
all of his productive years in the shadows of the Jim Crow era when
blacks were barred from playing in the major leagues and no records
were kept of his feats.
He was approaching 50 when the establishment finally let him run
out his string with brief stints with the Cleveland Indians, St.
Louis Browns and Kansas City Athletics. Even then, he continued to
dazzle.
