Markham prairie evokes lavish words of praise

I grew up in the Bible Belt, so I felt right at home recently at a ceremony dedicating a prairie in south suburban Markham. As 100 or so hardy souls huddled together under lowering and sometimes dripping skies, the lead speaker of the day was moved to liken their gathering to an old-time evangelism meeting.

But George Lamb, president of Northeastern Illinois University, and the other speakers really had an easy job of it, preaching as they were, to the converted. Their congregation consisted of the true believers who had fought the good fight and kept the faith through many lean years ...
