Third of a series RABAUL, Papua New Guinea It's hardly surprising that the Japanese memorial above Rabaul's volcano-sculpted harbor looks very much like a bunker with its hulking concrete walls.

The 90,000 Japanese troops stationed here during World War II spent much of their time in bunkers, tunnels and caves sheltering from the relentless Allied bombing. Between 1942 and the war's end in 1945, as many as 1,000 sorties a week dropped a total of 20,500 tons of bombs on this Japanese command center of the Southwest Pacific.
