Swedes pay tribute to Ingmar Bergman

STOCKHOLM Ingmar Bergman, the retired master of Swedish filmmaking,
had a less-than-highbrow start to his legendary career. He began by
directing witty soap commercials as an escape from unemployment.
Bergman's offbeat route to international recognition is revealed
in "Ingmar Bergman at 70," a birthday tribute published this month by
the Swedish Film Institute. The publication provides a unique
insight into the filmmaker's work.
